Exhibition: just left

The works of artist Xu Mingliang draw on everyday scenes from Northeast China, capturing traces of time in familiar buildings, furniture, and fragments of daily life. Beneath these seemingly ordinary images lies a sense of loss and stillness shaped by social change, evoking a collective memory that is difficult to articulate.

Status: built, 2021
Area: 100 sqm
Location: Shenyang

Titled Just Left, the exhibition extends the emotional atmosphere of the paintings into space. Rather than adopting the bright lighting and detached displays of a conventional white-cube gallery, we transformed the venue into an ambiguous setting somewhere between a home and an exhibition. A bed, tables, chairs, doors, and scattered domestic objects suggest that life once unfolded here, and that its inhabitants have only momentarily stepped away.

A single suspended light serves as the primary source of illumination. Its limited glow allows artworks and objects to emerge from the shadows, leaving much of the space partially obscured. As visitors move through the exhibition, their gaze shifts with the changing light. Viewing becomes less an encounter with individual paintings than an immersion in a life whose presence has not yet faded.

The space does not attempt to reconstruct a particular era or dwelling. Instead, familiar objects, restrained lighting, and moments of emptiness evoke a sense of recognition without defining its source. Somewhere between departure and presence, memory ceases to belong to any single object and begins to inhabit the air itself.

About

Baicai Design is a multidisciplinary design practice based in New York and Shenyang, working across architecture, interiors, exhibitions, and spatial design. Its practice spans different geographies, scales, and cultural contexts.

Founded by Kaiwen Zhao, Baicai is shaped by his interdisciplinary background in design and architecture. Zhao studied Industrial Design at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) and Architecture at the Yale School of Architecture. He currently teaches in the Department of Industrial Design at RISD, and has previously taught at the University of Colorado Denver, lectured at NYU Tisch School of the Arts, and served as a guest critic at Syracuse University.

Baicai approaches space beyond the conventional boundaries of interior design, bringing together architectural and product design thinking to address spatial questions. Through different scales of intervention, we explore the relationships between space, objects, and human behavior.
